The 74-year-old DN Gauri, chairman, Swarg Vatika Trust, is immensely pleased with what he has accomplished so far. The ex-IAF officer, philanthropist and an industrialist, has launched an eco-friendly and state-of-the-art crematorium complex called ‘Swarg Vatika’. Located at Trimulgherry, the crematorium is the first in the country to be built under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.

Right from its entrance, the crematorium catches the eye of the visitor. Quite contrary to a morose ambience, the place has a rock garden and is adorned with fountains. The serene ambience rushes in tranquility to any visitor.

“Our idea is to have a facility serving as an abode of peace unlike what we usually encounter,” says Gauri.

The walled crematorium, built on 13000 sq mtrs of prime land, was built at a cost of Rs 3 crore (project cost of which Rs 2.40 crore has already been incurred). Several eminent philanthropists, industrialists and doctors are patrons and trustees of this crematorium. This includes K Satish Reddy, vice chairman and managing director, Dr Reddy’s Lab; J Ranjith Rao, MD, My Home Industries; Sunil Talwar of Talwar Hundai; PR Ramesh, CEO of Deloitte; C Malla Reddy of Mallareddy Group of Institutions and Harish Kumar from Neeru’s.

The incineration centre also boasts of many modern amenities for cremating the bodies through bio-mass, LPG and CNG gassifiers along with electrical back up. Another highlight is the installation of the ‘Wet Scrubber Pollution Control System’, as per the Pollution Control Board norms, which also happens to be first of its kind facility in the state. The system connected to the bio-mass gassifier, LPG and CNG crematoriums, eliminates waste and foul odour, thereby ensuring zero pollution. The clean gases are then released through a 100ft high chimney. The bio-mass gassifier is unique in addressing the sentiments of people. It uses wood for cremation in the traditional way but only a third of the wood is consumed.

‘Swarg Vatika’ also addresses most essential needs like vehicles for transporting the dead; a room with vaults for preserving ashes; mortuary; cold store and mini store and a shed for storing wood besides manual burning platforms. To encourage more people to avail eco-friendly cremation options like bio-mass gassifier, LPG, CNG, these services are priced lower. The cost of services at the crematorium are, open (traditional) cremation – Rs 3500, bio-mass gassifier – Rs 3200 and LPG - Rs 3400.
