Hyderabad: A suspended head constable of the Public Transport Organisation (PTO) Giri Prasad Sarma kidnapped a BJP leader, Ramana Rao, here on Wednesday demanding statehood for Rayalaseema region. However, Sarma let him off in front of the DGP office after four hours of high drama. The police were questioning the BJP leader along with the auto driver who dropped him near the DGP office.

Sarma, however, called up a TV channel and informed that that he had in his captivity two of his former colleagues at PTO. He said he would reveal their identity only in the presence of the CM and the DGP on Thursday. He said that the statehood for Rayalaseema would help develop the backward pockets of the region besides addressing its socio-economic problems. It would also stabilise the region politically. He said that all the details pertaining to the kidnap would be made available on his website www.theheadconstable.com.

The suspended constable gained notoriety with the kidnap of an IPS officer in September 2012. The latest incident has sent shockwaves in the police department. A manhunt has been launched to nab him.

Unconfirmed reports stated that Sarma was arrested by the police late in the night. Saifabad police invoked Sections 365 (kidnap), 189 (threatening to injure public servant) and 506 ( criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Sharma last September when he held Laxminarayana, SP at the PTO, as his hostage for four hours at his shop at Adarshnagar in city.
