Hyderabad: Telangana Joint Action Committee chairman Prof M Kodandaram on Tuesday demanded that the State government increase the ex gratia amount to Rs 5 lakh for the families of famers who committed suicide due to crop loss.

Kodandaram, along with other members of JAC, visited Siddipet mandal of Medak district to meet the families of farmers who committed suicide. Speaking to media persons later, he said the State had been facing a drought-like situation due to inadequate rainfall and crop failure has pushed the farmers into a debt trap.

He urged the government to clear the crop loan dues immediately to provide relief to the farmers. Further, he said farmers should be provided fresh loans, subsidised seeds and fertilisers.

The JAC chairman also demanded that the State government send special teams across Telangana to assess crop damage so as to provide adequate compensation to the affected farmers.
