Hyderabad: The appointment of Prof S A Shukoor, as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Telangana State Wakf Board, would see him juggling with more responsibilities. The officer is presently heading Urdu Academy and Haj Committee as secretary and special officer respectively.

On Monday, Secretary Minority Welfare, Syed Omer Jaleel, formally gave additional charge as CEO. With the beginning of this year’s Haj Season, the official had already expressed his reluctance to take charge. But a memo was issued that Shukoor would be heading the TS Wakf Board in the absence of the official.

According to sources, Mohammed Asadullah, the present CEO, who is facing pressure from political groups and alleged threats from land mafia, has reportedly expressed his desire to go on a long leave. He would be transferred back to his parent department, the CCLA (Chief Commissioner of Land Administration) shortly.

The current CEO had initiated criminal action against encroachers and recovering hundreds of acres of prime wakf land, most of which is within Hyderabad. Asadullah was appointed during the month of April last year, after Sultan Mohiuddin’s suspension, the then CEO.

“This is not the first time a sincere official would be transferred under political pressure. But he was the first to bring in draft proposal to the government for an Act to ensure tht wakf is empowered with judicial powers,” said a source.

The official, who initiated strong action against encroachments throughout the State during the recent months, drew accolades from civil society groups and also some leaders in the ruling party. They appreciated the achievements of the CEO.

His achievements include preservation of the Mecca Madina wakf in Pathergatti which was under hands of a single family for last 60 years.

He also initiated criminal action against a fake Mutawalli, who had been collecting Rs 30 lakh per year from tenants of wakf property in Madinaguda near Miyanpur, stalled illegal construction adjacent to Masjid Nana Bagh in Basheerbagh and took possession of wakf properties in several locations in Khammam town.
