Hyderabad: Eminent environmentalists urged the Telangana government to include climate change as an integral part of the State’s development agenda.
They shared their views at a workshop organised under the aegis of Centre for Climate Change on “Climate Change Challenges – Synergy through Partnership,” held here on Thursday.
The speakers pointed out that of late Hyderabad city has been experiencing floods and extreme heat conditions. And, these could be addressed only by adopting effective mitigation methods.
However, the State government was not following the norms prescribed by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to stop flooding in the State.
Environmentalist Prof K Purushotham Reddy said, “Lack of a focused approach on the part of government on climatic issues has resulted in removing 3,000 trees from a big ecosystem of KBR Park.”
After a comprehensive study by the Centre, the speakers said Hyderabad was currently experiencing the “Heat island” phenomenon.
Heat Island phenomenon is associated for those urban areas which are slightly warmer than the surrounding areas due to human activities, they pointed out.
