Hyderabad: The Congress party on Friday demanded a CBI probe into cases pertaining to renegade Maoist-turned-gangster Md Nayeemuddin, who was killed in exchange of fire with police on August 8.

Addressing a press conference at Congress Legislature Party office, Leader of Opposition in Telangana State Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir said the seizure of cash, arms and ammunition and land records reflected the intensity of the crimes Nayeem and his gang had committed.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the State government would not be able to conduct a multi-dimensional, multi-disciplinary and inter-State investigation. He said the Income Tax and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) would be able to trace the origin of illegal cash and how it had been accumulated.

Similarly, the recovery of two AK-47 assault rifles, a Sten gun and other arms and ammunition had required investigation at the national and international levels. “How can a gangster have access to heavy arms and ammunition like AK-47 rifles? What is their make? Are they of Pakistan or Chinese make or were they stolen from the Indian Army or police? How were they smuggled into Hyderabad? Were they supplied by police officials themselves? This issue involved a threat to national security and a SIT, headed by an IGP rank officer and comprising of police inspectors, would not be able to find out the truth,” he said.

Shabbir Ali said land documents recovered from the dens of Nayeem and his accomplices showed that the gangster’s web had spread across five States of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. The SIT would not be able to conduct this inter-State investigation.

Further, he said the names of several senior police officials, bureaucrats and politicians were doing rounds. “Media reports suggest that several police officials and politicians, including those belonging to the ruling party, are suspected to have had links with the gangster.
