Hyderabad’s open liberal cultural centre Lamakaan, Banjara Hills is turning seven-years-old on March 13 and the owner’s are all set to celebrate in a big way.

This year has been remarkable in sheer numbers. The centre has hosted 130 plays, 113 talks, 64 movies, 40 workshops in addition to the regular weekly and monthly bazaars, classes and meet ups. But the journey was not easy as the centre faced a tough time from neighbours and the GHMC.

Speaking to the The Local, Lamakaan manager Akshay said, “This is the most happening place in the city and it is due to the love and patronage the people extended to us. Lamakaan was founded by Ashhar Farhan, Humera Ahmed, Biju Mathew, and Elahe Hiptoola; they form the Executive Council of this non-profit organization. Farhan's uncle Hasan, the original owner of the space, wished that it to be converted into a cultural space which is open to all.”

“Every society needs spaces where communities come together to discuss, debate, express and experiment as it discovers its future. Lamakaan aspires to be such a space for youth, marginalised communities and all who seek critical and aesthetic expression,” he said.

In 2016 Lamakaan had also faced a closure as the GHMC had asked officials to shut it down for a few days after a few neighbours complained of public misconduct. In response, an online campaign was launched by its supports that went viral in half a day amassing signatures and pledges from thousands of people to keep the centre running. Consequently, GHMC withdrew its closure threat.

“We have hosted and provided space for a wide range of activities and issues like gender rights, dalit, tribal and minority rights apart from performances and workshops by renowned artistes, poets, writers and filmmakers and will continue to showcase the best talent and highlight issues that need a wider audience,” said a determined manager..

Akshya informed that the seventh anniversary celebrations will involve a set of events that highlight their engagement with culture, politics and society. All the events are non-ticketed and free.
