The ruling TRS had declared support to NDA nominee Ram Nath Kovind in the election. The TRS members arrived at the Assembly in a bus from their party office.

The party on Sunday conducted a meeting of its MLAs to familiarise them with the voting procedure. The value each MLA's vote in Telangana is 132. The authorities made elaborate arrangements for the election.

The opposition's nominee for the top constitutional post is former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. Kovind, the former Bihar governor, and Kumar earlier visited Hyderabad to mobilise support for their candidature.

In the 119-member Legislative Assembly, excluding a nominated member who does not have voting right in the Presidential election, the ruling TRS has a strength of 82, followed by Congress (19), MIM (7), BJP (5), TDP (3), CPI (1), CPI-M (1) and Independent (1). There are 17 Lok Sabha members and 10 Rajya Sabha members from the State. TRS MLA from Peddapally Manohar Reddy and AIMIM Floor Leader Akbaruddin Owaisi could not exercise their franchise.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who enquired about the health of Manohar Reddy from his family members, told the latter not to come for voting while Akbaruddin is undergoing treatment at a hospital in London. While legislators cast their votes here, the 17 Lok Sabha and 10 Rajya Sabha members from the State exercised their franchise in Delhi.

The Chief Minister, Assembly Speaker Madhusudhana Chary and Leader of the Opposition K Jana Reddy were among the first to cast their votes.

The main opposition party, the Congress, which has 13 members, six legislators of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) and the lone member of Communist Party of India (Marxist) are backing United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate, Meira Kumar, the former Lok Sabha Speaker. BJLP leader G Kishen Reddy who officiated as the polling agent for Ram Nath Kovind was the last one to cast his vote.
