Poorna Swami was chosen for the Srinivas Rayaprol award from over 100 contestants from across the country by a jury consisting of distinguished literary scholar and poet, Prof. EV Ramakrishnan and two faculty members – Prof. Anna Kurian and Dr Gopika Sankar - of the Department of English, University of Hyderabad.

Poorna studied dance-theatre and English at Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts, and has published her poetry in literary journals and popular publications. Presenting the citation for the award to Poorna Swami, jury member and well-known poet, Prof. Ramakrishnan commended her poetry for its “effortless flow and assured poise” as they explore the intimate and everyday world of relationships.

Recognised as a significant award for creative writing in India, the Srinivas Rayaprol Poetry Prize was instituted by the Hyderabad-based Srinivas Rayaprol Literary Trust to recognize excellence in poetry written in English by poets in the age group of 20-40 years. The Prize is jointly administered by the Department of English, University of Hyderabad.

Poorna Swami regaled the assembled audience with a rendition of some of her poems, and so did Prof. Ramakrishnan as he read from his recent collection of poetry, “Tips for Living in an Expanding Universe”.
