GCC intensifies anti-mosquito, dengue control operations
Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation has stepped up vector control and dengue prevention measures across all 15 zones, deploying 3,597 workers to inspect premises and destroy mosquito breeding sources.
Noting that over 650 dengue cases were reported in Chennai in September alone so far, a senior Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) official on Sunday said that Commissioner G S Sameeran, in a review meeting, has instructed officials to maintain strict, continuous surveillance, particularly in educational institutions, and function with complete dedication to safeguard public health.
According to the official, to strengthen field operations, Domestic Breeding Checkers (DBCs) and public health staff are undergoing continuous monitoring and coordination training. Each worker is assigned to inspect 80 to 100 households daily across all wards to identify and eliminate potential breeding vectors, including discarded tires, coconut shells, broken glassware, and unmaintained open spaces in commercial complexes, construction sites, and government buildings, he said. “Fines are being levied on commercial establishments found with active mosquito breeding grounds”.
Pointing out that as part of larvicidal measures, Abate solution is being applied to water storage tanks, while Mosquito Larvicidal Oil (MLO) is being used in canals and stormwater drains, the Corporation official said that regular indoor and outdoor fogging operations are also underway to control adult mosquito populations.
On the medical front, he said doctors at Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCs), Urban Community Health Centres (UCHCs), and Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs) have received refresher training in fever management.
“Adequate stocks of essential medicines are available at all facilities”, he said adding “fever surveillance has been integrated across hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic labs, with discharged fever patients monitored for three consecutive days”.
