Puducherry: DMK president M K Stalin on Saturday expressed concern over spurt in the occurrence of heinous crimes in the union territory. In his virtual address to voters of Thattanchavady Assembly constituency, he said, “Puducherry is now becoming a Kolai cherry (a region of murders) as there is no end to heinous crimes.” He further wanted to know what steps are being taken by Chief Minister N Rangasamy and Home Minister A Namassivayam to prevent crimes. Stalin alleged that the law and order was in doldrums in Puducherry. He said Rangasamy had done nothing for the development of Thattanchavady.

“Rangasamy takes up the Puducherry statehood issue only when he has a problem. He had not led a delegation of legislators to New Delhi to persuade the Centre to sanction statehood for the union territory,” he said, and noted that both the BJP and AINRC are alliance partners. The former Tamil Nadu CM assured the electorate in the constituency that the DMK nominee K Sedhu Selvam would develop Thattanchavady, including the power supply.

Hitting out at the Congress, he said, “The grand old party stabbed the DMK on the back after winning five seats in the April 9 Assembly elections held in Tamil Nadu.”

The Congress is now part of the TVK-led government in Tamil Nadu. The Congress won two seats in Puducherry -- Kalapet and Raj Bhavan -- in alliance with the DMK. “The Congress chapter is closed in Puducherry,” the DMK chief said.

Stalin said the byelection in Thattanchavady was not a natural development. The poll has been imposed on the people by the AINRC leader Rangasamy who quit the seat after successfully contesting two segments in the April 9 elections.

Rangasamy has “abandoned” the people of Thattanchavady and hence, the voters should defeat the AINRC candidate in the bypoll to be held on October 6, he said.
