OpenAI has upgraded its ChatGPT Chrome extension, with features that help you browse and work every day more smoothly. I find this helpful. The update let's ChatGPT read data across open tabs. In a Work mode ChatGPT can fill out forms, send messages, download files and organise tabs.

OpenAI shared the update on October 15. They called it "the power of computer use, to anyone who uses Chrome." The company says the extension works in the background. It does not take control of a user’s browsing session.

The update also shows a change in OpenAI’s plan for the browser. Features that were connected with Atlas, the company’s browser, are now being added to the Chrome extension. This change lets people use ChatGPT’s browser features without going to a browser.

The extension now gives you two ways to use it: Chat mode and Work mode. In Chat mode it can pull info from tabs you have open. It helps you answer questions, compare things like products, sum up articles and give you context from webpages. You can also highlight some text on a page right-. Choose "Ask ChatGPT" to get answers. If a YouTube video has a transcript, you can ask questions about it too.

Work mode makes the experience better by letting ChatGPT work directly with webpages. OpenAI shows examples like filling out registration forms, adding events to calendars, putting data into business systems, downloading files and organising tabs. People can also ask ChatGPT to do tasks across services they are signed into like Gmail, LinkedIn and Salesforce as long as the right permissions are in place.

Privacy and permissions are still very important. Before you start using a website the extension will ask you to give permission. You can choose to allow access this one time or allow it for that specific site. You can also choose to allow access on sites or say no to the permission. OpenAI says things like letting the extension see all websites and letting it see your browser history are dangerous kinds of permissions.

The company says they don’t keep browser activity as a full record. Instead, when you use it in a chat the info becomes part of ChatGPT’s context. That includes things, like page content, screenshots, tool calls or summaries. OpenAI also tells users to treat webpage content as untrusted. They suggest not sharing information unless really needed.

The extension is also available outside of Chrome, including Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi although some features are different in each browser.

For users in India the update arrives as Google expands Gemini auto‑browse capabilities in that country. Chrome users now have access to competing AI tools that can handle tasks across webpages.

Users should still exercise caution. Users should close banking or confidential work tabs before using browser‑control features. Users should also grant website permissions one by one and review forms or messages before allowing ChatGPT to submit or send them. Dynamic web pages, pop‑ups and anti‑bot systems can also stop browser agents from finishing tasks.
