JAGTIAL: Students and doctors of Jagtial Government Medical College on Thursday called off their strike following positive discussions with State Ministers and senior officials over the issues concerning the medical college.
The discussions were held with Social Welfare Minister Adluri Lakshman Kumar, Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and senior officials. Jagtial District Collector B. Satya Prasad assured the students that the construction of the medical college building, hostel blocks, playground, mess and other essential infrastructure would be completed and made available by December 15.
Officials from the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) and the Health Department met the students directly and discussed their concerns. Ministers Adluri Lakshman Kumar and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy also spoke to the students over the phone and assured them that steps would be taken to address their demands.
Expressing satisfaction over the assurances given by the government, the medical students and doctors announced that they were withdrawing the strike. Classes and medical duties at the college are expected to resume as usual from Friday.
A special meeting involving R&B Chief Engineers, contractors and representatives of the medical college students will be held on Friday morning to review the construction works and ensure their completion within the stipulated deadline. Officials said additional manpower would be mobilised and the remaining works would be taken up on a war-footing basis over the next two months.
Officials said the government was taking measures to ensure that all essential educational, residential, sports and dining facilities required by the students were made available in full.
Additional Collector (Local Bodies) B. Raja Goud, Additional Director of Medical Education Ramadevi, Medical College Principal Subhash Kumar, doctors and other officials were present.
