Telangana Minister Ponnam Prabhakar held a review meeting at the Secretariat on Tuesday to discuss the BC Welfare Department and the Vidya Nidhi education fund scheme. He directed officials to improve transparency and efficiency in the delivery of welfare schemes for Backward Classes (BCs).
The minister asked officials to speed up Government Orders for building 38 Atma Gaurava Bhavans, or self-respect centres, for BC communities.
He said 4.80 lakh applications had been received for the sewing machine distribution scheme. Officials were told to prepare a plan to support 1.90 lakh women, with distribution scheduled for 9 December.
Of Telangana’s 327 BC residential schools, or Gurukulas, only 26 have permanent buildings of their own. Prabhakar called for dedicated facilities for the remaining 301 schools and urged officials to accelerate the acquisition of land.
He also called for reforms to BC Study Circles, with a focus on high-quality training that helps participants secure jobs. Officials were asked to prepare a special plan to expand self-employment opportunities for BC communities.
The minister proposed a special committee to oversee skills training for BC widows and single women. He also directed officials to take steps towards building modern communal laundry facilities, or Dhobi Ghats, in every Assembly constituency.
