As many as 1,200 bars and restaurants across Telangana are set to shut in protest against a proposed annual “privilege cess”, according to the Telangana State Bar and Restaurant Owners’ Association.

The association says the levy would add 8–20 per cent to each bar’s costs, potentially increasing annual expenses by up to ₹30 lakh. State president Damodar Goud said operators already pay between ₹33 lakh and ₹56 lakh a year in licence fees.

The association also plans to stage a protest outside the Excise Commissioner’s office at 12pm, demanding the cess be withdrawn. Goud said owners were already under pressure from permit rooms at wine shops, belt shops and the approval of new bars.

The association has announced protests across the state, criticising the government’s decision to introduce the additional charge.
