Suresh Naik, Chief Engineer of Stage 1 at the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant (YTPS), has been suspended after an 800 MW unit was taken offline, causing a loss in power generation.

Genco CMD Harish issued the suspension order following directions from the Energy Secretary. Naik is accused of failing to coordinate staff and ensure assigned work was completed. The action follows the recent suspension of a Divisional Engineer over lapses in maintaining stocks of light diesel oil (LDO).

The government has closely monitored the plant over the past month, with senior officials making frequent surprise inspections. Although coal supplies from Mahanadi Coalfields have increased, technical problems remain.

The conveyor belt is reportedly operating at half capacity and tends to snap when the load is increased. Performance Guarantee (PG) tests were allegedly completed without adequate quality checks, and technical defects have emerged within a year of the plant’s operation.

The plant is also short-staffed, with employees reportedly working two or three consecutive shifts. In addition, the ash water recovery system has failed, allowing ash-laden water to flow into the Krishna River.

Authorities have decided to conduct a comprehensive review of the PG tests and the plant’s quality-related shortcomings.
