Vijayawada: Reliance Foundation has launched a special mechanical retrieval initiative to recover more than 180 fishing boats stranded or damaged by Cyclone Arnab in Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district, aiming to restore the livelihoods of fishing communities.

The Foundation said in a statement here on Friday that the intervention is expected to directly and indirectly benefit around 10,000 people dependent on fishing activities in the region.

Cyclone Arnab severely affected fishing communities at the Odalarevu and Sakhinetipalli landing centres. Preliminary assessments conducted by Reliance Foundation teams identified around 186 affected boats at the two locations in Allavaram mandal. Several vessels were trapped in accumulated mud, canals and mudflats, while others were partially submerged or piled against one another after being displaced from their moorings.

As many boats weigh between five and 10 tonnes, retrieving them manually has become difficult and potentially dangerous.

The Foundation is coordinating with the Fisheries Department and government authorities in Allavaram mandal to undertake the operation using suitable mechanical lifting equipment, including cranes.

The retrieval process will involve identifying boats in consultation with their owners, confirming their locations and safely recovering or repositioning them in a planned sequence. Specialised equipment and safety measures will be deployed to minimise further damage during the operation.

The initiative will help fishermen assess repair requirements, prevent additional damage to stranded vessels and resume their livelihood activities as early as possible, subject to repairs and other necessary conditions.
