Vijayawada: NTR district joint collector S Ilakkiya called upon people to make environmental protection an integral part of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations and opt for eco-friendly idols. A special awareness programme was organised at the Collectorate here on Sunday by the district administration in association with the Pollution Control Board, Tourism, DRDA, Agriculture and School Education departments, along with environmental organisations and NGOs. On the occasion, Ilakkiya, along with officials, distributed 2,000 eco-friendly Ganesh idols and saplings. She urged devotees to replace idols made from materials harmful to the environment with those made from natural clay, fruits, flowers and seeds.
