Former IPS officer AB Venkateswara Rao’s bid for the Vijayawada mayoralty ended in a decisive defeat. Rao stood as an independent candidate with the backing of Left-wing parties and the Congress. He had hoped his administrative experience and public profile would help establish him as an alternative, but his campaign failed to attract significant support.
Of the 446,021 votes cast, Rao received 12,642. Alliance candidate Vangaveeti Radhakrishna won 265,888 votes, while YSRCP candidate Rayana Bhagyalakshmi secured 135,016. Rao received the lowest total among the candidates representing major political groupings.
