Bengaluru: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu called for a shift from ‘grey growth’ to green, circular and regenerative growth, saying future buildings should conserve resources, protect the environment and meet the needs of coming generations.
Speaking at the inauguration of The Earth Center–Vista Spaces in Bengaluru on Sunday, Chandrababu Naidu, along with Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, formally inaugurated the building, which has been designed by combining nature, technology and a modern work environment.
The Chief Minister said the experience of The Earth Center showed how buildings could be developed differently from conventional concrete structures by giving priority to environmental sustainability. Recycled materials and eco-friendly materials such as terracotta have been used in its construction.
“Development should not stop, but the environment should not be damaged,” Chandrababu said, stressing that environmental protection was the responsibility of everyone. He called for adoption of net-zero principles in construction, greater use of solar power, water conservation, recycling and reuse of waste.
He said climate change was not merely a future challenge but an issue already being faced, requiring changes in the way cities were planned and built. “Every rooftop can become a power plant, every drop of water can be reused and every waste stream can be converted into a resource,” he said.
Chandrababu said cities had expanded for decades on the basis of grey infrastructure and now needed green, circular and regenerative growth models. He also drew a parallel with zero-budget natural farming, saying the same spirit should guide urban development. He said India had set a national target of achieving 500 GW of green-energy capacity by 2030, while Andhra Pradesh was planning around 165 GW of renewable energy capacity.
Chief Minister Naidu said Amaravati was being developed as an environmentally friendly city. Recalling his role in developing Cyberabad when Andhra Pradesh was a combined State, he said he now had the opportunity to build another major city.
The Earth Center event highlighted the use of sustainable construction practices and technologies aimed at reducing resource consumption and environmental impact.
