IIT-Madras experts’ team surveying along the coastline
Pithapuram: The long-pending demand of residents of the Uppada coastal region for protection from severe sea erosion has moved closer to reality, with IIT-Madras beginning field surveys for the design and Detailed Project Report (DPR) of a proposed coastal protection wall under the special supervision of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan.
A five-member team of IIT-Madras experts has been conducting detailed surveys along the coastline for the past week using advanced drones and Trimble R980 GNSS RTK technology.
The proposed protection wall is being taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 323 crore with support from the National Disaster Management Fund.
The team is studying coastal geography, wave action, erosion intensity, changes in landform and sea currents.
It is also collecting sand and soil samples from the seabed to the beach for scientific analysis.
Bathymetric surveys are being conducted to assess sea depth and seabed levels, while beach profile, slope and elevation are also being studied.
Shoreline mapping has already been completed.

For nearly four decades, Uppada and surrounding villages have faced severe erosion, resulting in the loss of hundreds of acres of land and several habitations, besides displacing families and affecting agricultural land.
Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan has taken up the issue with the Centre seeking a permanent solution.
Based on recommendations of the National Disaster Management Authority, approval has been given for a sea protection wall, groyne field and nature-based coastal protection measures around Hope Island.
The Deputy CM has directed officials to complete the design and DPR within the stipulated timeframe while processing environmental and other statutory clearances simultaneously, ensuring that project works begin at the earliest.
