Indian-Origin CEOs Taking Over Global Giants: Anil Chakravarthy’s Journey to Adobe
In Short
From Bengaluru to the CEO at Adobe, Anil Chakravarthy is yet another person from India joining the ever-growing list of global corporate leaders.

Anil Chakravarthy
How did a man from Bengaluru end up getting ready to steer one of the biggest software giants on the planet? And why does Anil Chakravarthy becoming Adobe’s next CEO feel like more than the usual leadership shuffle? Today, Satya Nadella is running Microsoft, Sundar Pichai is leading Alphabet, Arvind Krishna heads IBM, and Neal Mohan is leading at YouTube. Nikesh Arora is at Palo Alto Networks, Leena Nair leads Chanel, Sanjay Mehrotra runs Micron, and Shailesh Jejurikar steers Procter & Gamble.
What feels really intriguing though, isn’t only the growing list of Indian origin executives popping up at the top. It’s that they’re spread across tech, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, semiconductors, consumer brands, and media too. Their paths look slightly different, but they all point toward a bigger shift in how corporate leadership is being re-shaped around the world.
Now Anil Chakravarthy is set to take charge as the CEO at Adobe on December 1 2026, replacing Shantanu Narayen after almost two decades in the company.
From Bengaluru to Adobe:
Anil Chakravarthy spent his childhood in Bengaluru, he studied in Vijaya High School in Jayanagar, and then studied at National College in Basavanagudi. After that, he went for computer science at the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University before he moved to the US.
At MIT, he got a master’s degree and also has done a PhD as well. After school, his career went through McKinsey, VeriSign, and Symantec, before he became CEO of the enterprise software company Informatica in 2015.
Then in 2020, he joined Adobe, coming in as executive vice president and general manager of its Digital Experience unit. Soon after, his scope widened to include worldwide field operations, plus additional pieces of Adobe’s enterprise work.
Why Adobe chose him:
Adobe is walking through a software market that’s being redrawn pretty fast, especially with generative AI in the picture. Fresh tools are changing how people create images, videos, designs and digital content, and platforms like Canva, along with other AI-first players are turning up the heat.
Anil Chakravarthy brings experience across engineering, enterprise software, product thinking, and business strategy. At Adobe, he’s also been closely tied to customer experience products that lean on data and AI.
His toughest job will be taking all that know-how and turning it into real growth, without loosening Adobe’s creative ecosystem, basically the whole foundation underneath everything.
The Indian origin CEOs already at the top:
Satya Nadella: Since 2014, Satya Nadella has been at the helm of Microsoft, and has been instrumental in furthering the company’s ambitions in cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
Sundar Pichai: Sundar Pichai took charge of the operations of Google in 2015 and was given the reins of Alphabet in 2019. Under his leadership, Google is going through a significant AI transition at the moment.
Arvind Krishna: At the head of IBM since 2020, Arvind Krishna has focused on hybrid cloud technology and artificial intelligence.
Neal Mohan: Neal Mohan was appointed as the CEO of YouTube in 2023 after holding various positions in advertising and product management.
Even if the industries look different on the surface, there’s a thread. Many of them built careers that went beyond pure technical skill, moving into products, operations, strategy, and global business leadership.
This all says the rise of Indian origin CEOs isn’t stuck in tech anymore, and it’s not only companies that are heavy on engineering either. They’re leading across industries and across markets, and many of them spent years , sometimes decades building deeper experience inside huge global organizations.
For Anil Chakravarthy though, the real pressure begins on December 1, 2026.
Adobe is entering one of the biggest technology shifts it has faced. His task is to make AI work as a true growth engine, not something that erodes Adobe’s core creative products or even the customer relationships that shaped the company in the first place.
