Jaya Bachchan reveals reason for quitting acting post marriage

Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan was a popular name even before she married Amitabh Bachchan in 1973. But she quit her acting career after getting married to Amitabh Bachchan and later revealed the reason for leaving her career.
While talking to Karan Johar, Jaya Bachchan opened up about quitting her career and said that Amitabh Bachchan told her “I don’t want a 9-to-5 wife”. And as Amitabh’s career began to flourish, Jaya had to stop acting as one of them had to be present at home for the children.
“He said that I don’t want a 9-5 wife. What happened was that he got so busy…that I said one parent has to be there with the children,” she said.
Jaya Bachchan also spoke about her daughter Shweta Bachchan and revealed that she had once asked her to not go for a shoot. “I was going to shoot and Shweta said ‘Mummy, I don’t want you to go. Papa can go’. That was heartbreaking for me,” she added.
Jaya Bachchan debuted in 1971 in the film Guddi directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Right from her debut film, she was compared to Sharmila Tagore. Jaya Bachchan took a 17-year break from the film industry after her marriage to Amitabh Bachchan and decided to settle down. She made a comeback in 1998 with the film Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa directed by Govind Nihalani.
Jaya Bachchan decided to quit acting because she wanted her children and family to have her presence at that time and not later when she would want to start her career again.
