Today is National Stop Bullying Day: Creating a safe and respectful school environment
In Short
Bullying is different from an occasional disagreement between friends.

Creating a safe and respectful school environment
Bullying is a concern that can affect students’ confidence, friendships and learning experiences. It can take different forms, including name-calling, teasing, spreading rumours, deliberately excluding someone from a group, physical intimidation and sending hurtful messages online. Understanding bullying is an important step towards creating a school environment where every student feels safe and respected.
Bullying is different from an occasional disagreement between friends. It often involves repeated hurtful behaviour and an imbalance of power. Even actions that appear harmless to others can cause distress to the person experiencing them. Students should remember that differences in appearance, language, interests, abilities or backgrounds are never reasons to make someone feel unwelcome.
Recognising the signs is the first step towards prevention. Students who experience bullying may become withdrawn, lose interest in school activities or feel anxious about attending classes. Friends and classmates can play an important role by noticing these changes and offering support without judgement.
If you experience bullying, try to stay calm, move to a safe place and speak to a trusted adult, such as a teacher, parent or school counsellor. Reporting the behaviour is not a sign of weakness; it is a way to seek help. In cases of cyberbullying, save relevant messages or screenshots and avoid responding with hurtful comments.
Bystanders also have a responsibility. Instead of laughing, sharing embarrassing content or encouraging the behaviour, students can support the affected person, seek help from an adult and avoid spreading rumours. Schools can help prevent bullying by encouraging respectful communication, setting clear expectations and providing safe ways for students to report concerns.
