World Post Day: Celebrating the Postal Network That Keeps the World Connected
In Short
World Post Day marks the founding of the Universal Postal Union. Acknowledges that postal services keep people, communities and nations linked.

Every year on October 9 the World Post Day reminds us of a truth that we often forget in the digital age.
Every year on October 9 the World Post Day reminds us of a truth that we often forget in the digital age. The power of sending a message from one person to another.
World Post Day marks the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874. Created in Bern, Switzerland the UPU united countries to build an organised international postal system. Today the UPU remains a part of global communication and cooperation.
For generations post offices have been more than places where letters and parcels travel. They have been a part of everyday life linking families separated by distance delivering important documents and carrying greetings during festivals and special occasions. For people receiving a handwritten letter was an event they eagerly awaited.
Technology has altered the way people communicate. Emails, instant messaging and social media can deliver information in seconds. Yet postal services still play a role especially in delivering parcels, official documents and essential services to people in cities and in remote areas.
In India the postal network holds a place in the country’s social and economic life. India Post has expanded beyond mail services offering banking, insurance, money transfer and other facilities to millions of people.
World Post Day is therefore not about letters and stamps. It is, about the people, workers and networks that have kept communities connected for centuries. As communication continues to evolve the postal system remains a reminder that meaningful connections can travel across any distance.
