95 bonded labourers rescued from charcoal units
Anantapur: A coordinated special drive by the District Vigilance Committee successfully rescued 95 bonded labourers, including numerous children, from charcoal-burning units in Bommanahal and D Hirehal mandals on September 30.
Acting on instructions from the district Collector, multi-departmental teams alongside NGO representatives intercepted the workers—belonging to Maharashtra’s Adivasi communities—who were trapped due to employer advances and harassment.
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate issued official Release Certificates at the Rayadurg Tahsildar’s Office, and arrangements were made to transport the victims safely back to Raigad via APSRTC buses. Authorities have initiated criminal cases against the employers under the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act.
Each released individual is eligible for immediate financial assistance of up to forty thousand rupees and comprehensive rehabilitation support, including education for children and healthcare, under central schemes. Officials announced that district-wide inspections of kilns and quarries will continue, urging the public to report any suspected bonded labour.
