Hyderabad: Although the impact of the El Nino phenomenon is far and wide across sectors and looming large on the power supply front, particularly to data centres and IT companies; amidst the abnormal increase in demand for power from all sectors in recent times, the state government has proactively launched measures to cushion the emerging crisis for the technology industry.

Specifically, dual power supply system is being developed to ensure uninterrupted power to data centers, IT, and other crucial industries in the Greater Hyderabad limits.

Installation of heavily loaded 33 KV and 11 KV feeders, additional PTRs (or capacity enhancement equipment) at substations where transformer loading exceeds 80 per cent are part of the important measures being taken to supply power without outages to the companies in the city, Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) officials said. The dual power supply system is an alternative to curb power cuts or maintaining heavy power loads in the peak hours.

The dual power system would be incorporated in two distinct power sources or feeder lines to guarantee continuous operation if one source fails. The new system would prevent unexpected shutdowns or data loss in high-availability electrical setups through seamless failover capabilities.

“Comprehensive network planning is already under progress to meet future power requirements under the impact of the El Nino. The alternate sources of power supply to minimise outages in the future is the main objective of the government during the crisis.”

TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Jitesh V Patil in the recently held meeting reviewed the increasing power demand in Greater Hyderabad. “Within the Greater Hyderabad limits, a peak demand of 4,072 MW was recorded on September 28 at 6:42 PM, while 82.89 Million Units (MU) of electricity consumption was registered.

During the current financial year, the highest demand recorded in the GHMC area was 4,782 MW, registered on May 22, 2026. On the same day, the highest electricity consumption of 101.07 Million Units was also recorded”, officials said.

The demand for power is likely to reach 5,000 MW in Greater Hyderabad before the start of the summer in March 2027. Before that, the TGSPDCL is ready to equip itself with all necessary logistics to meet the power demand particularly to Data Centers and IT companies.

The TGSPDCL is also expediting the works to develop power infrastructure for emerging industrial corridors such as Medharam–Ghatkesar, Thimmapur–Kandukur, Eliminedu–Ibrahimpatnam, and Dandumalkapur–Choutuppal, and to coordinate closely with the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) for timely execution.

“A robust power infrastructure is essential for the state’s economic growth, industrial development, and expansion of the digital economy”, officials said.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has already begun seeking reports regularly on the development of power infrastructure for industrial growth.
