Abhimanyu to return for Mysuru Dasara as ‘nishane’ elephant
Mysuru: After being retired at the age of 60 following six consecutive successful appearances carrying the golden howdah during the Jamboo Savari, elephant Abhimanyu is set to make a special return to the Mysuru Dasara procession in 2026.
The decision comes after thousands of Abhimanyu’s admirers expressed disappointment over his retirement and urged the government to give the veteran elephant one final opportunity to participate in the Dasara festivities. Responding to the demand, Forest Minister Ramalinga Reddy has directed officials to make arrangements for Abhimanyu to join the 2026 Jamboo Savari as the nishane elephant.
Abhimanyu has earned a special place in the history of Mysuru Dasara through his years of dedicated service. Known for his discipline, strength and calm demeanour, he successfully carried the golden howdah for six consecutive years, winning the admiration of people across Karnataka.
His long and distinguished service had led to a formal farewell ceremony being organised recently. However, many Dasara enthusiasts felt that his association with the festival should not end without allowing him to participate in the grand procession one last time.
Following the demand, the Forest Department has now decided to honour the veteran elephant by including him in the Dasara elephant squad.
The minister has instructed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests to take the necessary steps to facilitate Abhimanyu’s participation as the nishane elephant.
The move is expected to bring considerable joy to Abhimanyu’s admirers, who had been seeking a farewell similar to the honour accorded to Arjuna, another legendary Dasara elephant.
