CM D K Shivakumar calls for countrywide fight against UPI MDR

Bengaluru: The entire country should fight against the Centre's decision to introduce a 0.4 per cent MDR on UPI transactions above Rs 2,000, Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said on Wednesday.

Asked whether the Congress would launch a protest against the Merchant Discount Rate on UPI transactions, Shivakumar said the issue was not limited to the party but concerned the entire country. "This is the nation's problem. The entire nation will have to fight for this. The Congress is the opposition party and will fight to protect the interests of the common people," he told reporters. From October 15, a 0.4 per cent MDR will apply to eligible person-to-merchant UPI transactions above Rs 2,000. The charge will be borne by merchants, not consumers, and will be capped at Rs 300 for transactions of Rs 75,000 or more, according to the new framework. Person-to-person UPI transfers and merchant transactions of up to Rs 2,000 will remain free.
