Bengaluru: Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Thursday demanded the arrest of the alleged mastermind behind the sting operation controversy in Karnataka within two days, warning that his party would launch a protest if the police failed to act.

The controversy has intensified, with police reportedly detaining JDS IT cell members Shankar and Mohan following a complaint by former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Kumaraswamy criticised the police action and visited the Bengaluru Police Commissioner’s office to lodge a complaint.

Questioning the manner in which the two party workers were taken into custody, Kumaraswamy alleged that they had not been served notices, their mobile phones had been switched off and their families had not been informed. He also claimed that they had been kept in a shed until 8 pm. “The Home Minister has said that he would arrest me. I have come here myself. Arrest me,” he said angrily, demanding an end to what he described as the harassment of party workers. Soon after, Kumaraswamy staged a protest at the Police Commissioner’s office. The Police Commissioner tried to persuade him to end the protest, assuring him that the investigation would be conducted honestly. Kumaraswamy insisted that he too should be investigated to bring out the truth. He said he was ready to cooperate with the probe and even undergo brain mapping, if required. “I have no complaints against the police. There are honest officers in the department, and I am ready to face an investigation. But how can the person responsible be allowed to go free?” he asked.

Alleging that there was a conspiracy to eliminate the Opposition, Kumaraswamy demanded that the Home Minister visit the spot and explain the government’s position. He said he would not end the protest until the minister responded. Kumaraswamy eventually called off the protest after the Police Commissioner assured him of an impartial investigation. However, he gave the police a two-day deadline to arrest the alleged main accused in the sting operation case.
