Patil threatens resignation if Gadag not declared drought-hit

Gadag: Congress MLA H K Patil has threatened to resign from the Assembly if the Karnataka government fails to declare Gadag taluk drought-hit by October 10.
Speaking at Mulagund in Gadag taluk, Patil said farmers were increasingly angry over the government’s decision not to include Gadag in the drought-hit list despite a significant rainfall deficit in the region. Patil said a detailed assessment had already indicated that Gadag taluk was facing drought-like conditions. He said meetings had been held in the presence of the district in-charge minister, elected representatives and officials, following which a clear picture had emerged about the situation faced by farmers.
He said Chief Minister D K Shivakumar had also visited the affected areas after receiving reports from officials and conducted a crop inspection from Kadampur to Kurtakoti. Despite these steps, Gadag taluk was yet to receive an official drought-hit status, he said. According to Patil, Gadag taluk has recorded a 49 per cent rainfall deficit. He questioned why the government had not included the taluk in the drought list despite the extent of the shortage.
“Who is preventing Gadag from being declared a drought-hit taluk?” Patil asked, while stating that the situation could not be allowed to continue without addressing farmers’ concerns. He said he would continue efforts to secure drought status for Gadag through the government and the legislature. If the demand was not accepted, he said he would give the government a deadline of October 10 through the Assembly.
Patil said he would resign as MLA if Gadag was not declared drought-hit by the deadline. The MLA also said his own background as a member of a farming family had given him an understanding of the difficulties faced by cultivators during a drought.
Karnataka has already declared 101 taluks drought-hit, while the government has indicated that additional taluks could be added based on assessment and applicable guidelines.
The issue has gained significance amid continuing rainfall deficiency and concerns over crop losses in several parts of the state.
