Pink electric autos empower women in Dakshina Kannada
Mangaluru: Pink electric autorickshaws driven by women are gaining attention in Dakshina Kannada, with the Rotary International District 3181 promoting women’s safety, economic independence and environmentally friendly transport through its Sakhi initiative.
The specially designed vehicles are now operating on the roads of Sullia and Bantwal, offering a new livelihood opportunity for women while providing a dedicated transport option for female passengers. The initiative aims to support economically disadvantaged women, particularly those facing difficulties in managing their families’ expenses, by helping them become financially independent. Under the programme, Sullia City Rotary Club extended financial assistance to Geetha K.R., a resident of Jayanagar in Sullia, and handed over a pink autorickshaw to her.
The Rotary Club provides financial assistance of up to Rs 90,000 towards the initial payment for purchasing an autorickshaw. Beneficiaries can repay the remaining amount through manageable instalments from their daily earnings, making vehicle ownership more accessible.
Women who do not know how to drive are offered specialised training through a collaboration involving Mysuru-based Taliru Foundation and TVS Motor Company. The programme also provides legal andtechnical assistance to help beneficiaries obtain driving licences. So far, 12 autorickshaws have been distributed to women under the initiative. The Mysuru Metro Rotary Club sponsored the first 10 vehicles, while Rotary units in Mangaluru and Sullia supported the distribution of the remaining vehicles.
The initiative goes beyond providing transport vehicles, seeking to develop women into independent entrepreneurs.
It also aims to offer safe, reliable and comfortable travel options for women and girl students. Rotary representatives said preparations were under way to introduce more pink autorickshaws in the coming days. The initiative has received appreciation from members of the public and women’s organisations for combining livelihood support wi
