Stone pelting at mosque, madrasa during Ganesha immersion procession triggers tension

Bhatkal : Tension prevailed in Bhatkal after unidentified persons allegedly pelted stones at a mosque and a madrasa during a Ganesha immersion procession organised by the Taland public Ganeshotsava committee on Wednesday night.

The procession had started from Taland and was passing through the railway station road after crossing the Gulle railway bridge when stones were allegedly thrown at the Ismail Sunni Jamiya Mosque and Tajussunna Arabic Madrasa located along the route.

The stone pelting damaged windowpanes of both the mosque and madrasa. The incident has raised concerns in the town, particularly as it comes in the wake of the recent Murinkatte incident.

Soon after news of the stone pelting spread, hundreds of members of the Muslim community gathered outside the Bhatkal Town Police Station and demanded immediate action against those responsible. Abdul Alim, a resident of Bandar Road, and Shahul Ameen Gavai have filed complaints, based on which a case has been registered at the town police station.

Police have summoned some members of the public Ganeshotsava committee for questioning as part of the investigation. Officials are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and are also looking into who was responsible for the alleged stone pelting.

Security has been strengthened across Bhatkal to prevent any further untoward incidents. Senior police officers, including Superintendent of Police Deepan M.N., Additional SP G. Krishnamurthy and ASP Ranu Gupta, are monitoring the situation.

CPI Diwakar P.M. and PSI Naveen Naik are leading the investigation. Police have urged residents to maintain peace and avoid spreading unverified information while the probe continues.

Authorities are also examining available evidence to identify the persons involved in the incident and determine whether the stone pelting was deliberate.
