142 passengers resume journey after emergency landing of Colombo-bound flight

Chennai: After a Colombo-bound international carrier, carrying 142 persons onboard, made an emergency landing at Chennai International Airport on Tuesday night following a “critical” engine failure, the stranded passengers have left for their destination in an alternative aircraft, officials said.

An airport spokesperson here on Thursday said that the Vietjet flight operating from Ho Chi Minh City to Colombo was diverted here following a reported engine failure. Accordingly, a full emergency was declared at 9.55 pm on September 22, and all necessary actions were taken as per the airport emergency plan.

The aircraft landed safely at 10.27 pm and taxied under its own power to the designated parking stand. All 142 passengers and crew members deboarded safely and were facilitated by the concerned airline within the terminal. Subsequently, Vietjet Airlines arranged an alternate aircraft from Ho Chi Minh City, the spokesperson added. The replacement aircraft arrived at Chennai Airport on September, 23 at 8.22 PM and departed for Colombo at 10.23 PM with the stranded passengers.

The Vietjet flight involved in the emergency landing has been declared Aircraft on Ground (AOG) due to technical reasons and is currently parked at the remote apron of Chennai Airport. “The aircraft will be cleared for departure after completion of the required repairs and mandatory technical checks,” the spokesperson added.
