Guntur: Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) bagged two prestigious awards for its outstanding performance in controlling air pollution and protecting the environment. Guntur city secured second place at national level in urban category of Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan- 2026, conducted under National Clean Air Programme.
It also secured first place at State level in Ward Category-II, covering wards with a population of 10,000 to 30,000. As part of its efforts to control air pollution and protect the environment, the GMC has introduced several measures, including mechanised sweeping of main roads in the city, scientific management of solid waste, construction of roads using dust-control measures, regular sprinkling of water on roads to prevent dust and establishment of RRR centres, C&D waste collection points and cluster composting units at the ward level.
These initiatives helped Guntur earn recognition as a ‘National Clean Air City’. The awards were presented at a special programme at Indira Paryavaran Bhavan in New Delhi on the occasion of Swachh Vayu Diwas on Monday.
GMC Commissioner K Mayur Ashok received the prestigious award from National Green Tribunal Chairman Justice Prakash Srivastava; secretary of Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Tanmay Kumar; and additional secretary Aman Deep Garg.
In Ward Category-II at State level, Ward 42 of GMC secured first place.
