An 18-year-old first-year BTech student was killed and 14 others injured when a large, light-decorated arch collapsed during Dandiya celebrations at MVSR Engineering College in Nadargul, on the outskirts of Hyderabad, on Saturday.
The student, Narayanadasu Sona, died in the incident. Her sister, Meena, was among those injured, according to reports.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy responded to the accident and directed that the injured students be moved to Yashoda Hospital for further treatment.
Police have increased security at the college and restricted access to the site. The event had been organised by a private event management firm. Adibatla police are investigating whether safety requirements were met and the necessary permissions obtained before the arch was installed.
The event organiser has reportedly been taken into custody. The inquiry is also examining possible negligence by the college management and the organisers.
