Hyderabad: City markets stink as garbage piles up

Hyderabad: The irregular clearance of garbage piles at landmarks and in several busy commercial areas across the city is causing inconvenience to shop owners, commuters, and visitors, with wastes lying scattered for days on end. Even around historic landmarks and major markets, including Lad Bazar, Charminar, Pathergatti, Begum Bazar, Sultan Bazar, garbage piles have become a common sight. Traders have raised concerns over the accumulation of garbage.

Garbage thrown along roads and on footpaths have made movement difficult and disgusting for pedestrians and motorists. Shop owners say the wastes not only affect business but also create an unpleasant environment for customers and visitors. Tourists visiting the historic Charminar and surrounding markets are also forced to navigate through garbage piles. Same is the case on street with popular commercial establishments.

A commuter, Mohammed Ahmed, resident of Shalibanda said: “The roads are already crowded, and when garbage is left on the roadside, pedestrians are forced to move onto the carriageway. It creates inconvenience and also raises concerns about hygiene.”

Visitors to antiquated markets expressed disappointment over the condition of the surroundings. “People come here to see the Charminar and experience the traditional markets, but piles of garbage along the roads leave a poor impression. The area needs regular cleaning,” said a visitor.

With the festive and tourist season bringing increased footfall to several commercial areas, shop owners and commuters say immediate attention is needed to prevent the garbage problem from worsening and to maintain cleanliness in the major markets.

Shaik Khaled, an owner of bangle store in Lad Bazar, said: “We have been seeing garbage accumulate outside the shops for several days. Customers have to walk around the waste to enter the shops, and it is affecting the overall appearance of the historic market.”

Another shopkeeper from Begum Bazar, Shashikanth Rathi, said traders have been requesting timely lifting of waste. “We understand that markets generate a large quantity of garbage, but it should be cleared every day. Leaving it for days makes the situation worse, especially in a busy commercial area.”

Residents and traders have urged the civic authorities to intensify sanitation measures, ensure regular lifting of garbage, and deploy additional sanitation workers in busy market areas.
