Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone who catching Palapitta (Indian Roller) birds. He urged the public to alert police if they find the birds being held captive. Sajjanar shared the message on X, formerly Twitter.
“A festival should be synonymous with joy, freedom and compassion towards fellow living beings. Yet, during the Dasara season, some people, under the guise of ‘auspiciousness’, clip the wings of the Palapitta, Telangana’s state bird, confine them in cages and trade them.
“Think about it: how can anything good come from taking away a mute creature’s freedom and making it suffer by denying it food and water? How can there be anything ‘auspicious’ in a bird’s agony? The Palapitta protects the environment and is a true friend to farmers. It adds beauty to nature and brings honour to our society only when it is free to spread its wings and soar through the open sky.
“Under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, capturing, selling or displaying Palapitta birds is a criminal offence. Let us give these mute creatures their freedom this festive season. Do not, under any circumstances, encourage the display of captured birds. If you learn of any Palapitta birds being held captive, act as a responsible citizen and report it immediately on the toll-free numbers 1800 4255364 or 98033 38666, or by calling 112,” Sajjanar said.
