Samula Ram Reddy took charge as the chairman of the Bar Council of Telangana at its office on the High Court premises on Thursday afternoon.
He formally assumed office from outgoing chairman A Narsimha Reddy. Bar council secretary V Nagalakshmi attended the oath-taking ceremony.
Reddy was elected chairman on Sunday and succeeded Narsimha Reddy, who had held the post for nearly two decades.
Chalakani Venkat Yadav was elected vice-chairman, while G Kiran Kumar was nominated to the Bar Council of India. The results were declared on September 13.
Ram Reddy and Kiran Kumar were elected to the council for the first time, while Venkat Yadav was elected for a second term.
Ponnam Ashok Goud, brother of Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, was defeated in the election for chairman. Of the 26 Bar Council members who voted, Ram Reddy secured 12 votes, Ashok Goud 11 and Tangirala Hanumanth Reddy three. Hanumanth Reddy is the husband of HC judge Justice Tangirala Madhavi Devi.
Ram Reddy, who hails from Amaravaram in Huzurnagar mandal of Suryapet district, has been practising law for 35 years. He served as president of the Huzurnagar Bar Association for 25 consecutive years.
During his tenure, he played a key role in development of the historic Munsif Magistrate Court in Huzurnagar, which dates back to the Nizam era. He was involved in its modernisation and subsequent elevation as an additional district court.
