Scheduled power cuts for Telangana industry soon?
Hyderabad: Amidin creasing power demand under the impact of El Nino conditions, scheduled power cuts for the Telangana industry may become inevitable in the coming days. Although Electricity Department officials have ruled out power holiday for the industry, the state government is gearing up to address energy challenges.
In view of the increasing power demand for agriculture, commercial and domestic sectors, power supply to the industry has been a big challenge in the state for the last one month. “Power consumption in October reached an all-time high of 20,000 MW due to sudden surge in power consumption in the farming sector during the Kharif season,” said top officials of the Energy Department.
Despite the huge demand for power, the government rose to the occasion to supply adequately to the farming sector; for, otherwise, the farmers would have been affectedly badly due to withering of standing crops in the heat conditions.
“More than 60 per cent of power is being consumed by farming and commercial sectors and 16 to 20 per cent by industry. Domestic sector requires the remaining 25 to 30 per cent of the total power consumed every day.
The sudden increase in power demand in the other three sectors will affect the industry. It is required to take some measures to meet the power demand during the entire dry season in the next four to five months, mainly the end of Rabi season till April end. Scheduled power cuts to some sectors mainly domestic and industry would help overcome the sudden power demand in the peak hours every day,” a top official said.
The Energy wing is holding a series of meetings with representatives of the industry to resolve the impending power crisis in the state. In a meeting held with FTCCI and industry representatives on Saturday, Jitesh V. Patil, CMD, Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TSPDCL) informed that the government was taking prompt measures to address electricity-related issues faced by industries, while understanding their requirements and operational needs. He assured the industry representatives that their concerns would be reviewed and necessary steps taken to resolve them. The meeting held detailed discussions on improving the reliability of power supply, electricity tariff-related matters, reduction of delayed payment surcharges, solar power generation, net metering issues, and the appointment of dedicated relationship managers for High Tension (HT) industrial consumers.
The CMD stated that TGSPDCL would continue to take into consideration the suggestions and feedback of industry representatives and work towards making the power supply system more efficient and reliable.
