TGSRTC union polls record 98% turnout
Hyderabad: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) union elections recorded nearly 98 per cent polling on Friday, with over 34,000 of the 34,899 eligible employees exercising their franchise to elect a recognised union after a gap of almost a decade.
Polling was held at 115 booths across RTC depots in the State, with 12 unions in the fray. The process began at 5 am and concluded peacefully at 6 pm. The counting of votes will take place on October 15, with results to be announced on October 17.
Greater Hyderabad recorded over 99 per cent polling, followed by 98 per cent in the Hyderabad zone and 97 per cent in the Karimnagar zone. Of the total electorate, 13,797 employees belonged to Greater Hyderabad, 11,392 to Karimnagar and 9,303 to Hyderabad. The head office had 274 voters and the bus body unit at Miyapur had 133.
Authorities established 32 polling stations in Greater Hyderabad, 38 in Hyderabad and 45 in Karimnagar. Postal ballot facilities were provided on October 14 and 15 for the convenience of drivers and conductors.
The workforce included 14,514 conductors, 13,769 drivers, 4,207 garage staff and 2,409 other employees.
Three major alliances featured in the contest. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprised the TGSRTC Employees Union, Transport Mazdoor Union (TMU) and National Mazdoor Union (NMU). The second alliance included the Congress-backed Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), Telangana Workers Union (TWU) and Staff and Workers Union (SWU). The Telangana Joint Mazdoor Union (TJMU) and Bahujan Workers Union formed the third alliance. Employee welfare issues, including the merger of TGSRTC employees with the State government and salary revision, dominated the campaigns.
The elections will determine the union that represents employees in negotiations with the corporation and the government on service conditions and welfare measures.
The last union recognition elections were held on July 19, 2016, when the Telangana Mazdoor Union secured recognition. Unions were subsequently abolished during the previous government’s tenure. The Congress revived them as part of its election promise.
