Hyderabad: Telangana BJP Mahila Morcha on Friday submitted a representation to Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, seeking his intervention over alleged growing atrocities against women and deterioration of law and order in the State.
A delegation led by Mahila Morcha president Dr Mekala Shilpa Reddy expressed concern over women’s safety under the Congress government. She alleged that cases of rape, atrocities and attacks on women were increasing.
Shilpa Reddy brought to the Governor’s notice the August 28 rape and murder of a tribal woman working as a nurse at Prime Care Hospital in Thukkuguda. The Morcha demanded Rs 1 crore ex-gratia for her family and a government job for her mother or brother, besides stringent punishment for the accused through a fast-track court.
She also alleged that a Congress mayor and his followers attacked the elderly mother of Nalgonda BJP district president Varshit Reddy at her residence, resulting in a heart attack. Despite CCTV evidence, police had not registered an FIR, she alleged.
Shilpa Reddy claimed that 24,945 crimes against women had been registered in Telangana, including 5,940 sexual assault cases, 2,945 rapes, 3,145 POCSO cases and 1,735 cases of kidnapping of minors. She alleged Telangana ranked second nationally in POCSO cases and fourth in digital harassment of women.
The delegation urged the Governor to ensure adequate security for female medical staff, strengthen security at girls’ hostels and direct the government to establish a special monitoring system for women’s safety.
