Students of Satavahana University have raised concerns over hostel food
Karimnagar: Students of Satavahana University have raised concerns over hostel food, sanitation, safety and access to sports facilities, urging the authorities to address the issues immediately.
In a press note issued on Sunday, they alleged that high mess charges were being collected despite irregularities in serving food. Lunch was reportedly not provided on Sunday, prompting hostel residents to stage a protest at the university’s main gate. They also questioned restrictions on a gym reportedly established at a cost of around Rs 60 lakh. According to the students, additional charges were being sought for its use, and they demanded that the facility be made accessible without such restrictions.
Safety concerns were raised over the alleged presence of snakes in and around hostel premises. The residents demanded immediate cleanup of the surroundings and preventive measures to safeguard them.
The press note also highlighted sanitation problems, including accumulated garbage, mosquito breeding and unresolved issues involving hostel pipelines. The students urged the authorities to improve cleanliness and take measures to prevent health risks.
They further objected to restrictions on the use of a synthetic track and ground reportedly developed at a cost of around Rs 10 crore. Such restrictions were affecting those preparing for SI and police constable recruitment examinations, who need the facility for physical training, they said. The students maintained that meaningful development should also ensure basic amenities such as nutritious food, hygiene, safety and access to sports infrastructure. They demanded timely and quality meals, relief from excessive mess charges, access to the gym and synthetic track, a permanent solution to the snake menace, repairs to hostel pipelines, removal of accumulated waste and effective mosquito-control measures.
They questioned how major sums could be spent on infrastructure while basic facilities remained inadequate and urged the authorities to resolve the issues at the earliest.
