TG sports bodies seek transparent selection for KIYG sport

Karimnagar: Sports circles have welcomed Telangana’s selection to host the 8th Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2026, but sought clarity on the process for selecting an additional sport for the event.

Netball Association State president Boda Vikramaditya Reddy welcomed the move, while sports analysts urged the authorities to follow a transparent, merit-based process. They said softball, handball and netball should be evaluated equally based on national-level performance, medals won by Telangana athletes, participation and infrastructure.

They sought clarity from the Sports Authority of Telangana (SATS) on the eligibility criteria, particularly for softball. Analysts said the decision should not favour any association and must ensure equal opportunity.

They also noted that netball is included in the 2030 Commonwealth Games programme in Gujarat, making KIYG participation useful for identifying and nurturing future medal prospects.

They urged the Sports Department to hold a coordination meeting with all three associations before taking a final decision.
