Oil palm farmers told to conserve water
Khammam: Oil palm farmers in the district have been advised to adopt effective water management practices, conserve soil moisture and take preventive measures to protect plantations from heat stress in view of possible El Nino-related temperature rise and rainfall deficit. District Horticulture and Sericulture Officer MV Madhusudhan urged farmers to make advance arrangements for irrigation and ensure that high temperatures do not adversely affect plant growth and productivity.
He stressed the importance of drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting and moisture conservation to help oil palm plantations withstand adverse weather conditions.
Moisture stress may also increase concerns over basal stem rot (BSR), a disease associated with Ganoderma. The advisory calls for wider use of the early-detection kit developed by ICAR-IIOPR and promotion of the commercialisation and large-scale production of Trichoderma-based consortia for disease management. High temperatures may adversely affect the survival, movement and spread of oil palm pollinating weevils, potentially affecting pollination and fruit bunch development.
To reduce heat stress on palms and pollinating insects, the advisory recommends measures to improve field-level humidity through appropriate irrigation management.
