‘Wanaparthy Champions Cup’ begins on grand note

Wanaparthy: The first edition of ‘Wanaparthy Champions Cup’ featuring athletes from 15 mandals was inaugurated on Friday at the Polytechnic College grounds here by State Sports Authority Chairman Kotha Kapu Shiva Sena Reddy, alongside district collector Adarsh Surabhi and SP D Sunitha Reddy.
The event, which includes seven disciplines—cricket, kabaddi, volleyball, football, tug-of-war, carroms and chess—began with a tribute to the legendary hockey wizard Dhyan Chand; his portrait was garlanded, and a ceremonial torch was lit.
Following the hoisting of the sports flag, Reddy and Surabhi inaugurated the games by participating in a tug-of-war. A cricket match between the Kothakota and Revalli mandals followed. Subsequently, the guests inaugurated the volleyball, football, kabaddi, carroms, and chess competitions at the Government Boys’ School grounds.
The volleyball tournament commenced with a match between Wanaparthy and Panagal. In kabaddi, Panagal faced Chinnambavi, while in football, Amarachinta competed against Gopalpet.
During the inauguration of the chess tourney, the DC and Reddy were engaged in a strategic exchange of moves, encouraging the players. Later, the SP showcased impressive skill while playing carroms.
Speaking at the inauguration, Reddy stated that the ‘Champions Trophy’ events are highly effective in identifying talented athletes from rural areas. He commended Surabhi for his initiative in organising the event; assured that athletes who excel will be provided with opportunities to compete at the State and national levels.
“Following the model established in the district, steps would be taken to organise similar events in districts across the State during the Sankranti festival,” he said.
