Tipplers to back exchequer! TG govt eyes doubling revenues from bars
Hyderabad: In view of the increasing financial needs for the state, the Revanth Reddy government has begun focusing on doubling revenues from licenced bars to begin with.
With the fresh approval of permits for 41 new bars, the total number of bars across the state has reached 2,000. The Excise and Prohibition Department is keen on generating Rs 200 crore additional revenues every month from liquor sales in licenced bars alone.
On Friday, the draw of lots for finalising the newly permitted 41 bars was completed. State Excise Commissioner C Hari Kiran said that the overwhelming response for the new bar licences was a sign of increasing liquor sales ahead and the department was expecting good revenues from bars in the current financial year - 2026-2027.
Excise officials at the district level have already been entrusted with the responsibility of increasing liquor sales, particularly from licenced bars. “More than 70 per cent of the revenue is being generated from licenced wine shops. The contribution of bars in the sale of liquor is minimal. The increase in bars in the CURE area and other urban areas would definitely promote the bar culture in the future. Doubling the revenue from bars is the first target before the excise wing, followed by the increase of liquor prices of all brands soon”, the officials said.
Draw of lots peaceful
A total of 4,251 applications were received for 14 bars falling under the jurisdiction of the Deputy Commissioners for Greater Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri. Additionally, 4,519 applications were received for 27 bars located in various municipal corporations and municipalities.
