Nellore: Former Minister and YSRCP district president Dr Kakani Govardhan Reddy has demanded the government to release water from Srisailam reservoir at once to meet irrigation and drinking water requirements of farmers and people in Nellore district.

Along with party leaders, he inspected agricultural and irrigation conditions in Chavatapalem and Dammayapalem villages in Venkatachalam and Muthukur mandals respectively on Friday.

After noticing severe dry spell conditions, Kakani criticised that the government didn’t released water to agriculture operations despite sufficient water available in Srisailam Dam.

He alleged that the government is wantonly making inordinate delay to divert water to Somasila reservoir.

He also pointed out that the government failed to supply short-duration seeds to farmers to take up alternative crops.

Informing that they will stage a protest on Nellore Barrage on September 8 against the lack of irrigation water, Kakani appealed farmers to participate in the protest in large numbers to make it success. Kakani warned that poor water management could lead to drinking water shortages for people and livestock and could force cattle owners to move their animals to other areas in search of water and fodder.
