Noida: The police have arrested a 28-year-old alleged criminal following an encounter in Sector 63 of Noida in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Budhha Nagar district, with officials saying that 16 criminal cases are registered against him in Noida and Delhi.

The accused, identified as Shivam alias Shubham Rajput, sustained a gunshot injury during the exchange of fire and was admitted to a hospital for treatment, police said.

According to police, a team from Sector 63 police station was checking vehicles near Garhi Gol Chakkar late Wednesday night when a motorcycle without a number plate approached the checkpoint. The rider allegedly tried to flee after seeing the police, prompting the team to chase him.

During the pursuit, the motorcycle skidded and fell, police said. The accused allegedly attacked the police team in an attempt to escape and opened fire at the personnel. The police returned fire, injuring him, following which he was taken into custody.

The accused is a resident of the Ashram area in Sector 63, officials said.

Police recovered the motorcycle from the spot and, during the probe, found that it had been stolen. An illegal .315-bore country-made pistol and cartridges were also seized, according to the police. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Noida) Swatantra Singh said the injured accused was taken to a hospital after his arrest. His criminal record was subsequently examined, revealing around 16 cases registered against him in different police stations across the National Capital Region (NCR).

Further legal proceedings are underway, police said.

Earlier, the police and Anti-Narcotics Team in Uttar Pradesh’s Greater Noida seized ‘ganja’ worth Rs one crore and arrested three for smuggling the drugs. The arrests were made near Kudi Kheda turn on the Dadri-Lalkuan road in Uttar Pradesh. A total of 165 kg and 700 grams of illicit ‘ganja’ were seized. The truck and the car used for the alleged smuggling were also seized.
