Don’t watch politics from sidelines, join in: Speaker tells DU students

New Delhi: Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Tuesday urged young people to become active participants in politics and democracy,

saying India’s vision of a Viksit Bharat could be achieved only with greater involvement of the younger generation.

“Do not watch politics from a distance; step forward, participate and contribute to building a Viksit Bharat,” Gupta told Delhi University students during the Assembly’s Youth Outreach Programme.

Students from Rajdhani College, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College, Law Centre-I and Shivaji College visited the Delhi Legislative Assembly to gain first-hand knowledge of legislative democracy and parliamentary procedures.

During the interaction, Gupta spoke about his transition from Leader of the Opposition to Speaker. He said his experience on the Opposition benches had strengthened his commitment to ensuring that every legislator, irrespective of political affiliation, gets a fair opportunity to express their views.

He also highlighted steps taken to improve transparency, discipline and efficiency in Assembly proceedings. These include timers displayed on screens in

the House showing members the time allotted for their speeches.

Students were taken on a guided tour of the historic Assembly complex and briefed about its architectural and parliamentary legacy. They were also introduced to the commemorative coffee table book Ek Shatabdi Yatra and visited the main Assembly Chamber.

Gupta called on students to remain connected with democratic institutions and develop an informed understanding of governance and public affairs.
